  12. This is an update on the L.A. County Sheriff's deadly raid on 61
  13. year-old reclusive millionaire Donald P. Scott's scenic 200 acre
  14. Malibu Canyon ranch.  Mr. Scott had refused on several occasions
  15. to sell his property to the state.  He was then raided and shot
  16. to death when he responded to his wife's screams with a gun in
  17. his hand.  Mr. Scott, having just had eye surgery, could not see
  18. very well, but started to lower his gun when officers at a
  19. distance identified themselves and told him to drop the gun.  It
  20. is at this time he was shot.

  22. Shortly after the shooting, Mr. Scott's attorney accused the
  23. assault team (consisting of L.A. Sheriff's Deputies and Federal
  24. Drug Enforcement Officers), of staging the raid simply to seize
  25. land that was otherwise unavailable.  The Sheriff's Department
  26. was, of course, indignant that anyone could suggest such a thing.

  28. A 5 month investigation by Ventura County Dist. Atty. Michael
  29. Bradbury has just been completed.  It is his findings that the
  30. raid WAS staged in order to seize Scott's $5M ranch and there was
  31. NO LEGAL JUSTIFICATION for the raid.  His evidence includes a
  32. copy of the pre-raid briefing which contained local area property
  33. value appraisals and the key finding that the Deputy securing the
  34. search warrant used FALSE information to do so, then led the
  35. multi-agency assault team to the isolated ranch in hopes of
  36. finding drugs.

  38. It is my understanding that even with this evidence, the District
  39. Attorney is reluctant to prosecute any of the assault team
  40. individually.  Scott's widow and attorney, on the other hand, are
  41. demanding that the officer who shot her half-blind husband be
  42. tried for murder.

  44. COMMENT:  The common defense for shootings of this type consists
  45. of "the officer's life was in danger."  That seems to relieve the
  46. shooter of any personal responsibility.

  48. Unfortunately, with the various government assault teams more and
  49. more using flash-bang tactics in the dead of the night, the death
  50. toll of INNOCENT people will continue to rise, ...and no one will
  51. be held accountable.
